Starting your compost bin
This is a 55 gal blue barrel turned into a compost bin and sits on soil surface.
I have drilled 1/4" holes mostly at the bottom and bottom half of the bin for excess moisture.
Also added are, bulky brown materials, usually twigs of over 1/2" in diameter.
Throughout the year, food waste and stockpiled shredded leaf are mixed and goes in here to compost.
Basic rule
Dump and run = Lump and smell
Always mix your materials. Green (nitrogen source) and Brown (carbon source) should be mixed to reduce undecomposed lump or foul smell in the bin.
