Composting Worm - Eisenia fetida

E. fetida has stripes and tail tip is yellow.

Winter time composting options - Start your worm bin!

Worm bins will be very useful in the winter composting. I feed them with fruits and vegetable scraps buried in shredded newspaper bedding. 1 pound of worms (about 1,000 of them) can turn 1/2 pound of kitchen waste into nutrient rich vermicompost in a few days.

Out door wood bin

It is end of November and this 42" x 42" wood bin is loaded with all the yard/garden waste and shredded leaf. I don't add any more materials after this. I'm going to cover the top with large carboard and let it sit over the winter.

Starting your compost bin

This is a 55 gal blue barrel turned into a compost bin and sits on soil surface.
I have drilled 1/4" holes mostly at the bottom and bottom half of the bin for excess moisture.

Also added are, bulky brown materials, usually twigs of over 1/2" in diameter.
Throughout the year, food waste and stockpiled shredded leaf are mixed and goes in here to compost.

Basic rule
Dump and run = Lump and smell
Always mix your materials. Green (nitrogen source) and Brown (carbon source) should be mixed to reduce undecomposed lump or foul smell in the bin.
